Animism is characteristic of primitive social structures and tribal indigenous and often nomadic communities. it is typically associated with the early bronze age cultures of the Pre-Christian ERA which lacked a writing system there are no exclusive symbols representing animism a common feature is the spirit house. another feature is the sacrificial animal pillar characteristic of Indonesian cults. Animism int a specific thing like a religion it is a way of looking at the world and spirituality that is distinct from the civilized religions. There would be no rituals common amongs't all animists and is practiced in all parts of the world they have similarity's but their own practices.

These include:

- Returning to the family house after birth
- A ceremony at the village crossroad at the time the umbilical cord falls off
- 12 days after birth when the mother and baby can first enter the kitchen
- 42 days after birth there are ceremony’s at the crossroads for 3 months, 6 months, 18 months
- Puberty rites
- Tooth filing as a coming of age ceremony
- Marriage

Ancient human remains in Philippines reveal rare ritual burial
Batam Indonesia, this shows a ceremonial dance enacted by locals that practice animism. In this ceremony they would eat coals on fire and glass after performing dances for the spirits.
